These notes have been made as a result of a consultation with County Queen's Guide Award Co-ordinators, Queen's Guide candidates and others with an interest in the award.

Choosing a Queen's Guide Mentor

 The Mentor needs to be

Someone who knows the girls well

A person the girl feels comfortable with

Able to challenge the girl so she achieves all she is capable of

Committed to supporting the girl until the award is completed (or the time run out) i.e. 3 - 4 years

Available - so the girl can get in touch with her

Someone with knowledge of Guiding

Willing to learn about the QG syllabus, or have knowledge of it already

The Role of the Mentor

To give advice

Motivate the girl and help to keep her on track to complete the award

Help the girl plan and review her work on the award

Challenge the girl, so that the choices made are suitable rather than too easy or unattainable. Be truthful

Support the girl emotionally - good listening skills

Suggest the appropriate assessors for the clauses

Communication

While it's important to have good communication, please consider other people i.e. what time is best to ring?

It's a good idea to talk about an agreed minimum level of communication. The amount of times the mentor and the girl need to get in touch is likely to vary depending on which clause is being worked on

Email - it's worth considering. It can be very good for some people but not for all

Phone calls, letters etc.

Regular meetings between the mentor and QG co-ordinator can be very useful. They are there to support you so if you are unsure of something, just ask
